A few months ago I was asked by a colleague and former dance student of mine to hold a creative movement class for child care professionals. This continuing education event was put on by Alamance Partnership. I was thrilled to take on the task. I love sharing my ideas with others about children. It fuels my soul to talk to other teachers about children: how they learn, what they enjoy, and how their minds and bodies work. What an honor it was to have the chance to share what works for me with so many incredible teachers.
Thank you Teachers! I have so much respect for teachers because of what they do on a daily basis. Teaching children requires so much more than people understand. As a teacher we are given the opportunity to inspire and motivate youth. This requires a unique spirit that exhibits patience, love, and understanding while being authoritative and organized. Did I say that it is also exhausting? What bathroom break? Lunch by yourself? A moment alone to think? No, I do not think so.
I was so impressed seeing so many child care professionals come out on a Saturday, giving their day off, and dedicating it to becoming more educated in their field.
Why creative movement? I truly feel with all my heart that bringing music and movement into a child’s day not only makes them smile it resets their brain. Through music and movement a child is able to release energy, set their imagination on fire, and let their mind and body work together. After creative movement you will have a more attentive child and one that is ready to take on a task that requires focus.
By teaching the teachers basic creative movement activities, they can easily implement them in their own classrooms.
I taught a two hour class and used every second. We laughed until we almost cried a couple of times. The teachers in my class understood some “inside jokes” that only teachers who work with little ones would know. They showed me what a loving and fun group I had. I wish I could have had a little more time, but we were all sweating and hungry! Thank you to Alamance Partnership and to Nikki Huey for inviting me to speak. It has inspired me to do more, learn more, and to share more.
